What is the lumbar?

Lumbar describes that which relates to the abdominal section of the torso, which is the area located between the diaphragm and the pelvis. It helps support the entire weight of the body. The five vertebrae in the lumbar region of the back are the largest and strongest movable part of the spinal column. The nerve roots located in between each lumbar vertebra form the sciatic nerve, which is the largest single nerve in the human body. The sciatic nerve runs through the back of the legs and into the feet. Because of this, any lower back disorders that affect a nerve root may cause pain all the way down to the feet. The lumbar portion of the spine is susceptible to injury and problems over time because it bears the most body weight in addition to providing the most flexibility. The muscles that allow for this strength and flexibility are also susceptible to injury. This is why lower back pain is a common issue.
